How to write a federal resume for USAJOBS

Federal jobs, including civilian jobs on military installations at home and overseas, are filled through USAJOBS. Since September 27, 2025, a resume for a USAJOBS application can be no longer than two pages. A short federal resume still has to prove, line by line, that you meet the posting’s qualifications, so every line has to earn its place.

The two-page rule

What each job entry needs

Match the “specialized experience” paragraph

Each posting has a Qualifications section that describes one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade. HR specialists compare your resume to that paragraph.

Copy it into a document, split it into its separate tasks, and make sure your resume shows each task in your own words, with dates that add up to the time required.

Your answers to the assessment questionnaire must be supported by your resume. If you rate yourself an expert in a task, a bullet should prove it.

Preferences for military spouses and family members

Military Spouse Preference can apply to eligible spouses applying for DoD jobs in the commuting area of the service member’s new duty station. Agencies may also hire military spouses directly under the noncompetitive appointment authority for military spouses.

Overseas, DoD’s Family Member Preference applies to spouses and unmarried dependent children under 23 who live with a sponsor (a service member or DoD civilian) stationed in a foreign area. Key points from DoD Instruction 1400.25, Volume 1232:

FAQ

Can a federal resume be longer than two pages?

Not for most USAJOBS applications since September 27, 2025. A longer resume is not considered when it is your only one. A few agencies outside the main federal hiring rules may accept more, and the posting will say so.

Do I still need hours per week on a federal resume?

They are optional now. Month and year start and end dates are still required for each job, and hours help when part-time work counts toward the required experience.

Can I apply for an overseas federal job before we move?

Yes. Family members can apply up to 30 days before arriving, but Family Member Preference applies only after you arrive and live with your sponsor at the overseas duty station.

CareerPulseAI builds a tailored resume for each posting from your real experience, shows which requirements you can prove and which are gaps, and checks the format, so trimming to two pages keeps the lines that matter for that job.
